A Time Traveller's Guide

Bristol Zoo

Bristol Zoo first opened its gates in 1836 and is now the fifth oldest zoo in the world. Since then it has been home to tens of thousands of animals, including well known names like Rosie the Elephant and Alfred the Gorilla, changed from a Victorian Zoo to a Zoo focused on conservation and education, helped save over 175 species from extinction and have given more than 90 million visitors a great day out. Many of those visitors brought their video cameras with them and it is their footage that you will see here, combined with clips from the BBC, Bristol Record Office and the Zoo’s own archive. 2011 marked the Zoo’s 175th anniversary and continues to be a year of celebration; we can only wonder what exciting celebrations will take place for their 200th birthday.
